URL structure

• From version 1.2.1: enable Server URL rewrites (System => Configuration => Web => Search Engines Optimization)
• Set "Add store Code to Urls" under "Url Options" to "No".
• Set preferred domain under "Unsecure" and "Secure" => Base URL (will aslo remove session ID)
• Edit .htaccess to set up redirect to preferred (non)www around line 119:

RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9} /index.php HTTP/

RewriteRule ^index.php$ http://www.mydomain.com/ [R=301,L]

• clean and short URL's
• disable category names in URL (because of dupe issues) System => Configuration => Catalog => Search Engine Optimization and set "Use categories path for product URL's to "no".

Meta data

• title (65 char) with keywords in front, brand at the end
• default title can be editted here: Configuration => Design => HTML Head
• overwriting the default titles for categories/products will rewrite their complete title and also remove categories lying above
• to put your brand at the end of each URL set it as the 'Title Suffix'
• meta description (155 char) default empty, but unique and catchy for important pages
• meta keywords empty

Content

• unique content for each product page
• unique content for each category page (Catalog => Manage Categories)
• use the alt attribute on images
